Plan:

What did you do today on your PSA?
Today we went over the latest additions that apple made on iMovie, and I was impressed I think that this new gadget will add something extra to our project as we were not thinking about having an specific theme. I think we want to use the news cast theme and make it as if we were presenting our PSA in the news. We will be talking as we present the information.

What is your plan for next time?
For Thursday we are planning on actually getting the pictures we will be using and getting a graph completed so we can add it to the PSA. I want to see if we can actually screen some of the information b/c I feel like we have too many things we want to add and just not enough time to present them in. So we will have to find a compromise and see what information we think its most important.

What grade would you give yourself using your attitudes in technology Criterion F.
I came into class a little on the down side , but I feel like I came through... I was up for helping those people around me and I think that the only way we can move forward is if we try to make each other better. So I think I would give myself an 8. I could of been in a better mood and been less intimidating but oh well everyone has a bad day don't we?

PSA Poster/brochure-  What grade would you give yourself?
Over the break I began working on the brochure, I think that i was able to come up with a good product b/c I was able to really get into it and do something that I wanted to be proud of. I would give myself an A because I worked hard and it came out really good and my information in my opinion was very educational.

Plan: November 29, 2011

What is your plan today to create & begin your PSA using your storyboard?
My plan for today consists of basically figuring out the information that will be presented in the PSA. Deborah and I decided that we were going to do stick to a more simple approach and do the PSA with pictures information, statistics, and a few quotes. As far as we are concern we want to make sure that the message is sent  and we want a format that is easy to understand and will be appropriate for our intended audience. I am excited to work on this project. The storyboard we worked on over the break was very simple b/c we did not really know the direction we wanted to take this in. Now I feel comfortable with the what we want to do and I'm looking forward to see the final product.

Design Brief:

What is the general problem your group is trying to solve? or
Concept: (What do you want the user to think about?
What message do you want the user to get?)
we want to bring awareness to the lack of inter access us as americans have in this country an how this is affecting our education and further on our development overall.
Sources:
So I feel like we were able to get some interesting facts on our topic. I was able to get alot of graphs and information that will be used in the brochure and our PSA.
Any Research?
The information is on the posts below and the websites are liked for easier access.
Actors?
I do not think we will be using actor as we will be working with images and text rather than an actual clip or video.
Materials / Props?
Oour materials will be
a computer and the internet for pictures

Sound / Music?
we want to get something that appeals to our audience and makes them want to keep watching the PSA so maybe something new and up beat.

Software?-

Daily Progress: 11/9/11

Today I was thinking that I didn't really want to work alone so I asked around and found that Deborah did not know what to do for her project and so she and I decided to work together. I talked to her and she was fine with doing the digital access topic. I think that both of us working together on this topic will work out very good. I feel like now I can work on something a little more interesting and dynamic thanks to the fact that I will not be working alone.

Continuation:

So I was able to get a lot of good information. I feel like my topic is very brood and I will need to narrow it down. I was very taken back by some of the information I got today. Now I feel like I am gonna go home and do more research on this topic. This makes me want to do something that will make everyone want to take part in the movement to make this digital access available to everyone in every corner of the world.  I really want to portray the message of change and improvement through my PSA and I can't wait until I actually began working on putting it together.

Research: Day 3

DAY 3-  RESEARCH :  How does your topic impact your future digital footprint?

1. Today only 15 percent of the world has Internet access, and only 4 percent has broadband.
 source
2. Among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, Texas ranks 39th in percentage of households with a computer, 37th in percentage of households with Internet access, and 30th in percentage of households with broadband access

Source:
3.It is estimated that top 20 countries in terms of Internet bandwidth are home to roughly 80% of all Internet users worldwide.
4. Discrepancies in international Internet bandwidth - the critical infrastructure that dictates the speed at which websites in other countries can be accessed - are nothing short of astounding. Tiny Denmark has more than twice the international Internet bandwidth that the whole of Latin American and the Caribbean combined.
5. The high cost of international bandwidth is often a major constraint, with developing countries often having to pay the full cost of a link to a hub in a developed country. More than 40 countries have less than 10Mbps of international Internet bandwidth, whereas in Belgium, a 9Mbps ADSL high-speed Internet package is available for just EUR 60 a month.
6. There are still 30 countries with an Internet penetration of less than 1%.

7. The available languages on the internet are another major source of digital divide. About 80% of the websites are in English and the rest of them which account for 20% are mostly written in French, Spanish, German, Japanese and Chinese.

8. In 2010 there were 2.0 billion Internet users worldwide, having doubled from 1.0 billion in 2005. China had the largest number of Internet users in the world in 2010, at 418.9 million, followed

by the USA at 248.2 million;

9. China will have the world's biggest number of broadband subscribers in 2020, at 226.7 million, while the total number of Internet users will be 945.5 million in developed countries by 2020, compared to 2.8 billion in emerging and developing countries. The ITU has targeted having broadband access for half the world's population by 2015, while Brazil is targeting broadband access in 68.0% of households by 2014, and the UK wants universal broadband access by 2015.

10. n nominal terms, China has seen the largest increase in the number of broadband subscribers: they rose by 74.4 million between 2005 and 2010, an annual average growth of 24.5%. China has the world's largest number of Internet users, at 418.9 million in 2010;

Digital Access:

America Offline:
What does this mean?
I feel like this is just something that people here in the US have had to deal with the last couple of years. While country like China, Russia and India move on at the highest speed possible with their technological advances, the US has been falling behind. It is sad to think that we were once at the top and now we have fallen so low that we are in a deficit. I would think that everyone wants to make internet access everywhere a reality by working towards getting involved in the movement. BUt the reality is that we as americans are lazy and like to be handed everything without any work.

Digital Divide:
How does this impact you as a students?
This has a great effect on our education as a country. Internet access has been proven to make a difference in the quality of education children around the world. It in obvious that a typical 16 year old know more than I do just by the simple fact that their internet is faster. This is something that greatly upsets me an should angry many teen in this country. We are not getting prepared for what is out there in the real world. Once we get to college the competition for that college acceptance would be greater and we won't be ready for compete with others in our field of interest as the rest of this people will be more prepared.

Unequal Access:
How can lack of access to the internet impact your future?
I think this ties in with the previous question. I would say that the answer remains the same the real world is a very competitive place where they won't care where you come from as long as you are able to perform to their expectations. We will not be able to do this if we are not at the same level internationally speaking.

Innovators:
How will lack of digital access impact us as a country?
This lack of technology would just be a snowball effect that would led this country to the ground.

Some ways that would guarantee a better internet access across the country and world wide would be the government involvement on this issue. Meaning that if we can to change this lack of possible problem solving gadget we need important people to speak as the voice of every individual who is being left behind technologically. We cannot afford not being a part of this evolution process. By doing this we are not setting ourself or future generations for success. The government should not only make it possible but rather and I would think most importantly affordable because in the end what we want is for everyone to have the opportunity to have access to it and if someone does not have the resources to pay for it then what difference does it make if it is even available....

I would say that the government should really make this issue a priority and understand its importance. They should stop making excuses and get their act together and make it happen. There are many companies out there willing to put in the equipment but government regulations does not allow it and that wether we realize it or not is holding us back.

It is all about communication. Being able to get together and make a formal request to talk to a local representative or even a state rep would make the process a lot faster. Power lies on numbers and the more people get together and work towards getting attain on this issue the faster we will get internet access nationwide.

I think that this is all part of a big revolutionary movement, a ticking time bomb that was about to exploit anytime. This country is know for its innovation and overwhelming amount of talented people and yet we can't make internet available to everyone? The government know how important it is to make it possible. The internet is no longer a luxury it is a necessity.

Vocab Story:

Samantha was very upset at the kind of behavior that Sarah during 1st period. Usually, Sarah is the person who displays the most courtesy and today she has a very negative attitude towards the classmates. It was obvious, by the tone in her voice, that something was wrong. Samantha asked her if she was ok and she heard what she had feared the most. The emotion on samantha faced echoed what she had been so worried about, she was being flamed by some troll online. Both of the girls decided to search them up. The found a URL to the website in wich she was being bullied in and did some research; they found that the actions of the troll were not legal.

Evaluation:

Evaluation on Investigate:
When we started working on the process of  investigating tools we could use to teach the design cycle, I feel like I did not get much useful information on web based tools that I would use to teach the design cycle to the 6th graders. I think I list a lot of time due to the fact that I did not look a lot into them and those in which I did were a lost of my time. There were some good options but honestly I could not see myself making something that I did not fully understand....
so that is when I decided to go for the game board. Which in the end was probably the best decision I made.

Evaluation on  Design:
My three design were very different and not very realistic. I wanted to do so much and I didn't realize how much work it actually took to make it happen. But in the end I came through and my game board looked pretty good. I could of probably  gone for a simpler design that took less time to make, but I wanted to work on something that show some of my technology skills.I think that I let my imagination go crazy and that kind of frustrated me once i was given the green light to start creating my game board.

Evaluation on Plan:
I liked the Gant thing we used to calculate the amount of time it would take us to complete the create tage of our project. Once we were there, I actually began to think about how much time it would take me to complete the project and I began to panic. In the end it would take me about 550 minutes to have every part of my game board done. Atleast I had an idea of how much work, time and effort it was gonna take me,  so that was good. I tried to add time that I did not necesarily needed so that my goal of completing my tasks would be realistic. It was safe to say I kind of exxagerated but it was fine could I was able to get it done on time.

Evaluation on Create:
So I had began working on this stage during class and realized that it was not gonna be so easy to do so, so I got to work immediatly. I had some issues working with the design of my project and in the end I had to make a scale model on paper just so that I would be able to visualize the final product. I color coded each stage of the design cycle and added pictures realted to each to ensure a certain level of understanding. The game cards were the ones that took me some time to figure out due to the fact that I wanted thme to be double sided and I had to figure out how to do so. I think that this was what actually took me the longest and what gave me the worst headache. After all of that was out of the way I realized I need the little moving thingies.... So I decided to recycle them from an old monopoly game.

Evaluation on Evaluate:
I  would like to think that I reflected in every stage to the best of my abilities. I know my product could of been better, but honestly I think my game board came out pretty well. I think I was successful in the creation of my product. Based on the surveys I got from the 6th graders after they played my game, I came to the conclusion that they had an idea of what the design cycle was becouse they both got 6/7 correct and answered the bonus question right. But I think that what was more important is that they liked it and learned while they were having fun and so I feel like I was successful.

Evaluation on Attitudes in Technology:
In this final criteria I find myself to have been doing very well throughout this long and stressfull process. I was able to stay positive, most of the time. I  tried my best on helping those around me be successful and understand what they were doing. I liked having the liberty to do what we wanted and they way we wanted.

IA Part 2

1.How can my learning serve my community?
I believe that everyone's contributions to our community define who we are and who we will become in the future. As a piece of the puzzle of this world everyone's imput is needed inorder to succed. By applying our knowledge and previous experience we make better decisions and therefor the final outcome of whatever we are doing is better.

2. How can your future projects become better?
Future projects , I think, should always be better. By applying the knowledge you gained in the past and the ideas of you have at the time, you have an amazing formula to the creation of somethat that much better.

3. What have you learned about yourself and what you will continue to do or not do and why?
I have learned that I like to work hard and like big goals, because I like the satisfaction of knowing I accomplished something nobody else dared to do. I will continue to this and get better at managing what I get done and in what period of time so that I am not stressing out at the end when things are due.

4. How do you feel about your final product? What would you rate yourself on the Rubric scale of 1-6 for each part of the Assessment Criterion?
I would say that based on how things worked out, I would rate myself a 6 in all of the categories b/c in the end my product came out good, and I wouldn't have been able to do so without doing all of the previous steps right.

5. What would you do differently in regards to your planning and execution of your plan?
Actually I am the person that believes that the planning stage is the hardest just because its a hassel trying to figure out what to do when. I would probably try to be more realistic as to what gets done on certaind days.  There were alot of variables that kept me from performing to the max during this project but in the end it looked good and it helped me teach the design cycle to the 6th graders.

Testing of Product:

So today we got the chance to work with the 6th graders.  Two of them came into our lab and played with my game board. They seem to be very interested, but I feel like it was too easy. They were able to finish playing one round in about 5 minutes. But I feel like the fact that they were only two people playing made it the same shorter and they were really in to it really helped make the time go faster. I noticed that maybe the dice having 6 sides might have been made the game go faster, so I might need to modify the dice thing. But other than that they seemed to enjoy it, I noticed they were asking questions about what each step was about based on the pictures I put and how I color coded them so that was good. I was given the opportunity to explain to them more less what the design cycle was about and what it was used for and I think they got a really good idea of what it stands for and how it helps not only in school, but also in our everyday life.

Evaluation Survey

 Survey:

What is the 6st stage in the Design Cycle?

What is the 2st stage in the Design Cycle?

What is the 1st stage in the Design Cycle?

What is the 4st stage in the Design Cycle?

What is the 3st stage in the Design Cycle?

What is the 5st stage in the Design Cycle?

What is the Investigation stage all about?

Which part is the hardest?

Extra Credit:
How does the Attitudes in Technology stage help or hurt you in the process of your project?

Create

As of this morning my project is officially complete. During this three day weekend I decided to finish all the details of my game board and put it together. I finalized my design once I was actually making all of the components of my game. I made it very color coded and made sure it grabbed the players attention. The Investigation stage is red and has clip art that relate to the theme of questioning, investigation and researching. The Design stage is blue and has a lot of pictures that relate to coming up with different design for the project. The planning stage is yellow, I added calendar pictures and stuff that symbolized time management and emphasis the importance of scheduling out stuff. The create stage is purple. I put some pictures of people making different things and actually putting things together. The evaluation stage is green. I put pictures of people going over their work, testing and making sure what they did was right. Lastly the last stage I decided to add was the attitude in technology and that was pink in here I decided to add a picture of people being positive and helping each other out.
I also decided to create2 sets of little cards that the players would get if they were to land on certain spaces during the game. One being the "Titan Pass" and the other the "Hall Pass". These cards will get you out of "The Office" or make you restart the whole game it just depends on your luck.
In the end I changed a lot of the dimensions for the size of my spaces, My board went from being 24x24 to 20x20 because the trifold is 20x40.
I do not want to be conceded, but I do want to be honest so I feel like I would give myself a 5 1/2 because there is always room for improvement. But at the same time I feel like my project was really good, but I know I am being bias since it's mine and in the end  I was the only one that actually worked on it so I deserve some credit.

Thursday, October 6, 2011

So today I finalized my design and started working on the dimensions of my board and color coding every part of the design cycle. I decided that I would have 6 different colors each for every stage of the cycle and then another color for the start and the end spaces.

Design Brief

10. Write a short statement of what you are going to make, why you are going to make it, and for whom you are making it.
Formulate a Design Specification
For my project I am working on creating a board game. I want to theme it in a way where I can use glow in the dark material and make it appealing to the 6th graders. I want the kids to be able to understand it and have fun while learning.

11. What are the requirements for this assignment?
  •  Simple to understand
  • Simple vocabulary
  • Not too distracting
  • Actually works (teaches the design cycle)
  • Able to be taken to other places,
  • Have 4 sections
  • Be 2 1/2in. by 2 1/2in.
  • Be complete and decorated in a way that calls for attention
  • Be a minimum of 5 min. per play.

12. What are the limitations you have with this assignment?
It is something that only a couple of kids can be using at a time.
so maybe the next step, if it works, would be to create more of these game boards so everyone is able to learn the design cycle. Also I would assume that those kids that like to break things will be tempted to damage it, so the limitation would be that the game board is not tear proof, but I can work on that and hopefully have something that can help solve that problem.

13. How will you "test" your project?
The way I am planning on having my survey tested is through a simple survey. It would have to be about 5-9 questions b/c I don't want it to be more than 10 ,but I do not want it to be less than 5 questions because then I don't think that the test will be getting the essence of what the design cycle is. I think another way that I would know whether or not my game was successful is if the students can actually win it. The whole purpose of the game is to win it and if they are not able to then that means that the did not learn it very well and my mission was not accomplish.

Investigation Reflection

So base on the work that I have been able to accomplish throughout these last couple of says I would think that I earned a good grade. I have been able to express and relate the problem to real life situations where the design cycle and the process of it in itself is needed in order to solve the problem. I mentioned on my post why it was important that the 6th graders understood and know the design cycle. I think that the should be able to relate any other process of problem solving. I have been keeping up with all the things that need to be done in class. I think that it would have been harder to keep up with all of the work if we didn't have a class blog. It was deffinitely a way to keep track of all of the things that needed to be done. I have to admit that there were times when I had to go home and finish my posting or questions. So therefore I have to rate myslef a 5-6. I think that a 5 would be kind of low but at the same time a 6 is alittle too high and I believe that there is always room for improvement because nothing is ever perfect. So I think that I deserve something more like a 5.5 .

3 Designs

So I have been thinking about the direction in which I want to take my project and  I have come up with 3 "IDEAS" that I think would work.

Idea #1.
So for my 1st idea I have come up with the theme of animals. Kind of like safari but without it being ugly. I would use very vibrant colors, a lot of animals such as parrots, butterflies, elephants, giraffes, snakes. I want it to be unisex that way both the boy and girls can be interested. The way that the game board will be set up will be the same for all three of my designs because I can't think of another way to keep it from turning into a whole different project. I want the designs to not be completely different so that way it is easier to judge by one variable rather than a whole concept. Just because I don'
t have time to put all of the components together to make one cohesive board game.

Idea #2.
As for my 2nd idea I was thinking about having it be in a futuristic theme. This will let my imaginations GO WILD! With the planets, astronauts, aliens, stars and all that good stuff. I really like science and so I think that that would be perfect. And because I really like this idea, I think that it could work even though not a lot of girls might like it, it will definitely catch their attention. I can even try to see if I can make it glow in the dark! Specially since they sell those kinds of paints and they would have no excuse to play since they work need light either.

Idea #3
And lastly for my last Idea I was thinking of having each stage being represented by what it actually is so for the Investigate it would be like a library. For the design it would be like a room full of architectures working on a project.  For the Planning stage I would use something like a calendar or an agenda. For the create part of the design cycle I think I will go for like a factory where they are actually making things. And for the evaluate I would have kids having to take a test. I think that having this option will make it easier for the kids to relate to the Design Cycle and be able to see how each part is actually being represented in the real life.

So I think that even though I said that I don't want to mis ideas, I think I want to incorporate my last idea with idea #2 so I can work with glow in the dark paint and also help the children learn the design cycle. I am so excited and I think that if I stick to this designs there is no possible way that these kids will not learn the design cycle. I think that they will be stocked to have the glow in the dark component and the aliens with the planets and stuff or at least I hope they will.

Comparison of Board Game to Arcade Game

Board Game
Measurement
Score (1-5)
Themes

layout
 4
Simplicity

Total
18

When rating the THEME I would say that with doing a 3-D board game, the possibilities are endless. I can literally let my imagination go wild and truly do something that the kids will enjoy learning from. I can possibly make a design where my intended players would be girls, so it would be a more girly theme in pinks an or pastels that way it would be more appealing to them and their attention has shifted from being bored and uninterested to suddenly becoming aware that the board game can actually be fun and without realizing it they will be learning THE DESIGN CYCLE. And the same goes for boys. If the theme is more like construction or army the color scheme will definitely make a difference. Which is why I scored it a 5.
My approach on this project will either make or break my success. I have decided that considering two completely different approaches will help me get a better understanding of what can work. Whether the kids are able to interact with the product is very important to me. I am the kind of person that learns by doing and seeing so therefor I am gonna create that something that I could use to easily learn something I am having trouble with. The fact that if people can touch it they are able to learn it better, makes me lean more towards wanting to do something that this kids can use to play with therefore I scored it a 5. I want the kids to interact and feel like they playing when actually the are learning.
The LAYOUT is something I definitely have to look into, and be very careful as to how I go about it. I want it to be simple yet very attractive and grab every one's attention. It need to be in a way that doesn't distract from the purpose of the actual game. I'm thinking something along the lines of Monopoly. The layout is very clear and somewhat simple. And besides the kids would be able to see the similarities and quickly get on board as to how to play it. The score I gave it was a 4 exactly because of that reason I believe that the layout could turn out to be very easy to understand.
If anything it would get a little complicated in the instructions, but overall the concept is very simple. which ties in with the theme and the layout. In the end the SIMPLICITY of the project comes down to all of the elements previously mentioned on my post. I want it to be something anyone can use at any time. That's why I went with the over all score of simplicity being a 4. It is not a five because I don't believe in something ever reaching the full potential completely, their will always be room for improvement and a little more  to work on. But I believe that if I use the information I m planning on getting from the 6th graders then my final product will be great and very useful.
So in the end my FINAL SCORE for option #1, the board game, was of a score 18 out of 20. This score was almost perfect which leads me to believe that this will probably be the choice for my presentation. I think that with the scores being so high that this will be a better representation. But who know I still haven't rated the other one. I tried to get in the mindset of a 6th grader so I would score it accurately. Obviously this scores are totally up to me, I will have to work efficiently to make some changes in my design so that those 4's can eventually turn into 5's and it can be a successful product.

Since I did not actually look into an arcade website, my answers are probably not accurate, but I would think that the THEME are limited and not customisable. Which is why I decided to score it a 3.I would think that this might be interesting to SOME of the kids but not everyone. Some kids don't like playing games on the computer, I know I don't. I am gonna be honest and say that I feel like I am being bias but the reality of this is that I don't see myself actually trying to figure out how to find the perfect theme for all of the 6th graders on an arcade game online. I am not given many options and I can't go back a reprogram the way the website is ran.I want to have the power to say what I want to do and how I feel kids will learn,  and that is not from a template that a website gives me.
The limitations of an arcade game online are obvious. This is something that you would need a computer and Internet to be able to use. I scored it a 0 in KINESTHETIC . I would like to see the students have something that they feel they can use regardless of the purpose of the actual game board, and with the arcade game although the theme helps it is not something they can hold in their hand and observe. My project has to be tangable something that they can PLAY with. This kids are still at an age were they like to mess around and I would think that they would rather mess around with a game  board than with a computer because if something happens to the computer they would have to pay for it and that would get them introuble although that is not a valid argument since they probably don't care.... But anyways the score was given due to the fact that it doesnt make sense in my mind to give them something that I consider a waste of time and effort becouse I am not 100% sure that they will learn from it and I don't want to jepordize their learning.
Its hard to think of an extreme, SUPER hard LAYOUT out there for gaming in itself, so when I think of  the layout of an online arcade game I can;t really say negative things. I think me scoring it a 3 is fair because I think that there are definitely some programs out there that have nice layouts that are children friendly. I could of scored it higher, like a 4, but the thing is that I would need to go in and actually see the websites of these arcade game and at this point I really can't go back. And again in these kinds of websites I can't make my own layout and on those in which there is an option to do so; adding to it is not an option you can only take away. And quite frankly I don't want to mess around with it, I like having the control and being able to do my own decisions specially with this project.
I scored it a 4 in SIMPLICITY. Even though I scored it kind of low in the rest I believe that it can be a simple website kids will easily understand. That doesn't necessarily mean that they will understand it, its just that they will know what to press to start playing. And that is not the idea for this project. They need to able to learn from playing, or so I believe but they need to be able to retain that information and later on apply it so that the show they have learned it. Even though they are able to understand they are not necessarily learning, and therefore the idea doesn't work. I know I'm probably being more than bias because I am sold on the conselt of the board game but I am trying to look at it as a researcher would; so I am over analying it.
So for my last scoring as the TOTAL, I added up all of the other components and it came up to a 10. Its half of 20 so its obviously something anyone could consider. I personally think that if I weren't doing the board game I would deffinitely be doing something along the lines of an online arcade game, but not right now. I want to do something that I feel comfortable working with and I fell like an program online limits my control and creativity and I can't worl very efficiently that way. So it has some work to do, again this is my opinion, I can't speak for anyone when I give my scores because everyone is different and they don't all learn the same way.

Reflection: Day 2

So far I have no idea as to what I am gonna do. This is scary because we need to be done with this stage of the design cycle by Monday. Today I looked at some websites on the hope of finding the perfect tool to teach the 6th graders the design cycle. I found that it was easier said than done....
I am very frustrated because I don't know how I'm gonna present this, or if I am even gonna do it using an online source. The easiest thing at this point it just do something in which I won't have to use a web based program but something I can physically produce.
So with that being said I'm going to work really hard into getting some interesting and different ideas for this project. I am not gonna lie this is challenging and I can't seem to find a way out. I could possibly choose to make a board game.  Also I was looking to cartoonster which was a complete waste of my time.It wasn't even a place where I can work it was more of a resource as to how to draw.

I am not even thinking about the rubric at this point, right now I just want to see if these kids would be able to understand the consept. But I do know that I would have to test  the simplicity, kinesthetics , and the layout.

Design Folder

HOW DO I MAKE SOUND CHOICES? HOW CAN MY LEARNING HELP MY COMMUNITY?

Area of Interaction: Community and Service , Approaches to Learning & Human Ingenuity
Significant Concept: Design Cycle can be used to solve problems
Unit Question: How can my learning help my community? How do I make Sound Choices?
INVESTIGATE: (Write in complete sentences) Identify the Problem
1. What is the problem you need to solve? We need to effectively clarify the design cycle to 6th graders in a way that they understand the concept and are able to apply it. 2. How does the Design Cycle apply to the real world?  Not necessarily do people realize that they are using the "design cycle", but if you think about it, we do it all the time. When we encounter a problem, we always think about past experiences and what we did to solved them, that being our investigation process. We also think of ways to fix the problem, that being the design stage. Once we actually put a time and date to our actions that is when we "plan" what we are gonna do to fix the problem, being obviously the planning stage. The moment we begin solving the problem is when we began to "create" a solution to the problem. And finally when the problem is either solved or just miserably failed at least you tried and think about what could of been done differently or about how you can improve the way you solve things, thats the final stage which is the evaluation part of the design cycle. 3. How will this project serve my community? I think that when we begin to think about ways to help others we are helping our community through the mutual involvement of the helper and the help receiver by enriching the learning and understanding of everyone around us. 4. How can my learning help my community? My learnings can be applied through the work I contribute to, meaning if I learn how to cook for example I can use those skills to help feed those individuals in my community that aren't that fortunate. 5. How do we live in relation to each other? If both the community and the individual choose to help each other and collaborate I would think that the community would be a place rich of knowledge. 6. How does this help others?  I would assume that if everyone is helping each other and collaborating  to make things better then the world would be a happier place for everyone to live in. 7. What are the requirements for this assignment?  We need to be able to get the message across for 6th graders who don't understand the design cycle. 8. What is the Design Cycle? The process we follow when working on a project or a problem in our everyday lives. REFLECT on your learning. Day 2 9. Spend one day experimenting with DESIGN CYCLE your presentation. List five things your learned about the Design Cycle: * its very simple * very applicable and easy to understand * something we should use more often.... * helpful
Day 3
Design Brief
10. Write a short statement of what you are going to make, why you are going to make it, and for whom you are making it.
Formulate a Design Specification
11. What are the requirements for this assignment?
12. What are the limitations you have with this assignment?
13. How will you "test" your presentation?
REFLECT ON YOUR LEARNING
PLAN:
14. Brainstorm ideas. Use the chart below
IB Brainstorming Chart .pdf found in schoology under “materials”& then files
15. What idea did you choose to demonstrate the design cycle and why did you choose it?
16. Does your idea meet all of the requirements?
17. Use the story board paper below to plan your presentation.  Include how many levels you will have, what will be on each level, how will you include teaching skills to young students, and what will your questions be about.
story board.pdf found in schoology under “materials” & then files.
18. Explain how you will use your time to get your project finished in 12 days:
REFLECT on your learning
EVALUATE:
20. How could you improve your presentation?
21. Does your presentation meet all of the requirements?
22. Share your presentation with at least 2-8th, 3-9th, 4-10th+ friends. What did he/she like about your presentation?
23. Reflect on all the steps of the Design Cycle. What did you do well? What do you need to improve?
24. Were you responsible in using the software, Internet, pictures, and computer?
25. How can my learning help my community?
26. What grade do you deserve on this project? (1 - 6)
ATTITUDE:
27. Reflect on your attitude on each step of the Design Cycle. Did you completely answer each step without complaining, being a whiny baby, or saying "it's too hard". Explain your answer:
28. What grade do you deserve on your attitude? (1 - 6)
